Germany had honoured her most outstanding musician, Wagner, with several stamps showing scenes from some of his operas, while in contrast was shown Dvorak—a Czech whose hatred of Germany found expression in his HumorHer researches into the history of composers, said Mrs Laing, had revealed mat Handel, although born a German, had later acquired British citizenship, and at his death was buried in Westminster Abbey. The U.S.A. had recently issued a series of stamps commemorating “ Famous Americans.” and musicians were naturally included. Best known among these was probably Sousa, oi brass band fame. Others depicted were Stephen Foster. composer of "My Old Kentucky Home Herbert, a comic opera composer; and Niven, composer of “My Rosary.” No such collection could be complete without the composer of the " Marseillaise.” honoured by France with a stamp showing “De Lisle’s ” statue, Mrs Laing said. Several of lesser-known musicians were introduced, and where available Mrs Colvin presented short extracts from their works. Also on display at the meeting was a number of recent French and German issues and a series of stamps issued by Japan when the Philippines was first occupied. Master Beadle, a pupil of the Technical College, submitted for display a number of designs for a possible issue of stamps for the Otago centennial. These dealt with suitable stages in the development of Dunedin and Otago. Four new members were admitted. ■-
