CENTRE FOR 1948 ALLOCATION TO INVERCARGILL At a meeting of the Dominion Council of the Royal Agricultural Society, held in Wellington last week, it was agreed that the 1948 Royal Show should be allotted to the Southern* District Council, to be held in the centre decided upon by that body, and the Southern District Council has now decided, in conformity with the arrangements made at its annual meeting at Gore in May, to hold the Royal Show at Invercargill. The arrangement made at Gore was that an application should be made to the Dominion Council for the 1948 Royal Show, and that, in the event of the request being granted, the Otago A. and P. Association should have the show for Otago’s centennial year if it were prepared to carry out the extensive alterations to the Show Grounds which would be necessary, otherwise the Royal Show was to go to Southland. The Otago A. and P. Association has now intimated that, after careful investigation of the position, it does not feel warranted in incurring the heavy expenditure required to enlarge the exhibiting grounds and providing the additional housing accommodation for the stock. ~ An application will be made to the Government by the Dominion Council of the Royal Society for a subsidy to cover extra rail and ferry costs involved in bringing stock from the North Island. . The 1947 Royal Show will be held in Hawke’s Bay, Hastings being the centre indicated.
