SOUTHLAND NOTES

; PSALM ON INJURED LIST | (Special) INVERCARGILL, June 12. ! During the next few weeks several | 'Southland trainers will race their i teams at the Oamaru, Ashburton and South Canterbury winter meetings, which form an attractive circuit leading up to the Grand National meeting in August. At this stage the prospects of the Southland jumpers are much below those of recent years. Apart from the handling of several youngsters little training of any consequence is being carried out at Invercargill at the present time. The course proper is being top-dressed and has not been open since the Dunedin meeting. A number of horses raced at Wingatui have been put aside for the remainder of the year. Including several youngsters, T. E. Pankhurst has a team of 10 in work at the present time. He intends to take five or six horses to Orari for the remainder of the season and race his team from that centre. Among the horses he will take will be Siglow, Siegtone, Sing Sing, Spare Part, and Beaugm’d. Siegtone is to race at the Ashburton County meeting on June 22 and she will also be seen out at Washriyke next month. She was backed and beaten in her two races at Wingatui, but the going was against her on each occasion, 'while on the second day some of her gear came adrift. Sing Sing iooks none the worse for her two hard races on Saturday and she, too, will be raced at Washdyke, with the National meeting to follow. Siglow appears to be sounder than at any other stage since he has been at Invercargill and present intentions are to race him at the South Canterbury meeting, where the lighter country should suit him. He also will be raced at Riccarton in August. Spare Part, a rising three-year-old Salmagundi gelding, ranking as a half-brother to Siegtone and Spearthrust, was taken to the Dunedin meeting for educational purposes. He is a grand type of youngster and as he claims an engagement in the Dunedin Guineas it is intended to have him ready for early spring racing. Beaugard, a rising two-year-old colt by Beau Vite from Lady Ina, has made good progress in what he has attempted and he will probably be raced as an early two-year-old. A recent addition to Pankhurst’s stable is Hangover, a three-year-old Friday Night gelding from the Rosenor mare Gay Deception. He has been qualifying with the Birchwood Hounds and will probably be seen out in hunters’ events later on. F. W. Ellis will probably race both Psalm and Invulnerable at Washdyke later in the month. Psalm has met with more than her share of troubles during a restricted career. In her first appearance at Wingatui she had her chance wrecked by being bumped at the barrier. The reason for her poor showing on the third day was that she was suffering from a bruised foot, and she was very lame on pulling up. Provided she recovers she will be taken north. The Gore trainer J. R. Cochrane will race Ara Chief. Pencarrow, and Depth Charge at Oamaru on Saturday, with the Ashburton and the South Canterbury meetings to follow. Some interest will be shown jn Pencarrow’s initial appearance in open company in the Oamaru Winter Cup. run over a mile and a-quarter. Wingatui running suggested that he will more than hold his own. Ara Chief has been backed and beaten in recent appearances. The Royal Chief three-year-old has been doing his best work at the finish of his races and may be seen to advantage over further ground. Depth Charge is not far from his best and is one likely to be a winner at short notice.
