APPEAL TO PUBLIC

CONSERVING GAS SUPPLIES RECORD CONSUMPTION LAST WEEK

An appeal to the public to effect every possible economy in the consumption of gas was made yesterday by Cr L. M. Wright, chairman of the Gas Committee of the City Council. “The consumption of gas last week was the highest ever recorded at the gasworks,” Cr Wright said. “In view of the difficulty of obtaining normal requirements of coal and the practically impossible task of securing additional quantities to meet the increased consumption of gas, the public is asked to conserve the use of gas wherever possible to obviate the necessity for introducing rationing. “The corporation is endeavouring to avoid this method of ensuring a reduction,” Cr Wright added, "and I feel certain that the public can be relied upon to co-operate with the Gas Department, so that rationing will not be necessary.”
