PLANE CRASH IN SYDNEY
INQUEST ON THE VICTIMS VERDICT OF ACCIDENTAL DEATH (Rec. 11 p.m.) SYDNEY, Mar. 27. The coroner to-day recorded a finding of accidental death in respect of three persons killed when a navy “Firefly” plane crashed in the yard of Lewisham Hospital, Sydney, on January 31. The pilot escaped by parachute, the observer died from a fractured skull, and two hospital employees died from burns.
After the accident, the pilot stated that he had told the observer to bale out, and released his own harness when the plane went into a spin and threw him clear.
The plane struck a narrow courtyard with a blast of flame and an explosion. It was impossible to do anything for the victims, but several slightly injured people were removed from the vicinity, and firemen stopped the spread of the flames to the hospital itself. Nevertheless, considerable damage was done to the building by the force of the explosion. Only a few yards from the crash doctors were performing a serious operation, which they completed despite the danger from fire and debris.
