SINGAPORE DISORDERS
POLICE ACTION SUPPORTED DEMONSTRATORS PUNISHED SINGAPORE, Feb. 17. Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten has issued a proclamation saying the enforcement of public order in Singapore by the civilian police or any other authorised body had his full support. The demonstration on February 15 was connected with an attempt to organise a holiday which had been forbidden because it would have entailed a renewed stoppage of work so soon after the Chinese new year, also because it was proposed to celebrate the anniversary of the subjection of Singapore - Citizens ■ had the right of protection ' against unnecessary harshness, but they must be reminded that disturbances would not be tolerated. The British Military Administration Court sentenced 15 Chinese who were arrested during the demonstrations to one . month’s imprisonment, and fined t them 25 dollars for holding a procession and beating drums without permits. Nineteen others chose to go to trial. An official inquiry committee at Singapore declared that the police were fully justified in firing on “ Communist demonstrators.” The committee’s report is published by South-east Asia Command, which ordered investigation after Lord Louis Mountbatten had received numerous complaints, that the police action was unnecessarily harsh.
