SPANISH REPUBLICANS

APPEAL FOR RELEASE SERVICE FOR FRANCE LONDON. Feb. 17. The president of the French Council (M. Gouin) has asked the French Ministry of Foreign‘Affairs to intercede on behalf of Spanish Republicans who fought for France during the liberation and who are now held by General Franco, says Reuter’s Paris correspondent. The communique states that the Government is besieged with letters, telegrams, and petitions protesting against sentences passed by Franco. In this evidence of solidarity, M. Gouin sees proof of the French people’s gratitude and promise of a fruitful understanding with the Spanish people.
