MORE THAN £49 A HEAD Australians now pay a total Commonwealth and State tax of £49 Os lOd a head. This official figure for 1944-45 was given by the Acting Commonwealth Statistician at Canberra last week. The total compares with £4 14s 4d in 1914, and it. has risen by £23 8s since 1940. Commonwealth Government tax collections for the last financial year totalled £337.900,000, or £34,200,000 more than for the previous year. State collections were £22,100.000—an inciease of £BOO,OOO. With Commonwealth reimbursements, the State figures v/ere £55,500,000, which was £1,400,000 more than for 1943-44, but £1,700,000 less than for 1941-42, before uniform tax was introduced Commonwealth taxes for 1944-45 per head were: Income tax. £29 7s 2d; Customs duties, £2 18s 6d; excise duties, £6 4s 6d; payroll tax, £1 10s 3d; probate and succession duties, 8s sd; land tax, 10s; sales tax, £4 0s lOd; flour tax, 5s sd; entertainments tax, 13s 8d: gold tax, lid; gift duty, lid. Statetaxes per head were: Income tax (arrears), 2s 3d; probate and succession duties, 17s Id; other stamp duties, 9s 2d; land tax, 3s sd; motor taxes, 16s sd; lottery taxes, Is 9d; entertainments tax (mainly racing), 5s sd; liquor taxes, 3s 9d; licences and all othes taxes, la 2d.
