The combination of the Wellington Cup meeting and the national yearling sales may be said to have established Wellington as the racing hub of New Zealand. A lengthy catalogue will go under the hammer at this year’s sales, and by way of comparison it is of interest to recall that the first four vearlings sent up by the Elderslie Stud were returned unsold. They included Skirmisher, a winner of the Canterbury Welcome Stakes, the New Zealand Derby, the Canterbury Cup, etc., and Pibroch, the dam of Menschikoff and Stepdanccr, and ancestress of the great mare Warstep. The Best

Vrom the holiday racing just concluded (says St. Simon) Golden Souvenir stands out as the best horse at present in training. Gcod judges who watched the running of the Auckland Cup declare that he was the moral winner, and his success in the Clifford Plate over the winners of the Great Northern Derby, King’s Plate, and Racing Club Handicap under the weight-for-age scale firmly establishes his class. % High-priced Purchase The brood mare Stretto, with a filly foal by the imported stallion Finis, winner of the Ascot Gold Cup, was sold last week to Sir James Fletcher and Mr J. C. Fletcher for the Alton Lodge Stud, Te Kauwhata, for 2000gns. Stretto was bred by Mr A. J. McGovern in 1933. She is by Hunting Song from The Begum, by Chief Ruler from Lucella, by Lucullus from Seatonella, by Seaton Delaval. She Is a half-sister to High Caste, winner of £35,678 in stakes, Mazir, Arvakur, and Nizam. Stretto was herself a good performer, her victories including the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie, the Herries Memorial Cup at Te Aroha, the Awapuni Gold Cup at Awapuni, and the Warwick Stakes at Warwick Farm. The Clifford Plate

The Clifford Plate, run at Ellerslie, provided an excellent contest (says the New Zealand Herald), although the honours were definitely with the winner, Golden Souvenir. Landveyor tried to lead all the way, closely attended by Exeter, with Rakanui, King's Pride, Lady Foxbridge, Representative, and Golden Souvenir following as they passed the seven-furlong post. Golden Souvenir moved up smartly going along the back and at the five furlongs was fourth behind Landveyor and Exeter together, and Rakanui. King's Pride and Lady Foxbridge were next and Representative was last. Exeter and Landveyor were the leaders into the straight, with Golden Souvenir and Lady Foxbridge in close attendance. Golden Souvenir did best in the run home to win by over a length. Exeter just beat Landveyor for second. Lady Foxbridge was a good fourth, and Rakanui right up fifth. There was a gap to King’s Pride, with Representative well back. Successes at Auckland
