AWARD TO RECTOR
CONDUCTED HOSTEL IN SYDNEY NEW ZEALANDERS HELPED Voluntary work done for New Zealand servicemen passing through Sydney was responsible' for the inclusion in the New Year honours list of the name of an Australian clergyman, the Rev. Arthur Ebbs, rector of St. Matthew’s Anglican Church at Manly. Mr Ebbs was appointed M.B.E. in the New Zealand list. Mr Ebbs opened a servicemen's hostel in the church hall at St. Matthew’s as early as December 30, 1939, and it remained open until a few months ago. More than 40,000 servicemen, including many New Zealanders, stayed there for varying periods. It is a source of pride to Mr Ebbs and his women helpers that no man using the hostel was charged a penny, and that every man was given clean linen on his bed, supplied with a 2s ticket for breakfast at a Manly cafe, and looked after in every way possible. The hostel became well known to New Zealanders and many were advised to go there by the New Zealand liaison staff in Sydney. Mr Ebbs is at present in hospital, which he entered to undergo an operation.
