EARLY ABANDONMENT , AUSTRALIA’S DECISION CANBERRA.'Jan. 3.
After Mr Chifley had had a long discussion with the Army Minister, Mr F M. Forde, about aspects of the prime Minister's recent visit to New Guinea, it. was stated that Wewak will be abandoned as a military base as soon as possible. It was also stated that other military centres in the islands north of Australia would he closed in accordance with a programme which had been drawn up, until finally oniy those regarded as strategically necessary would remain.
