ESTONIAN-BORN PLAYER DOMINION CONGRESS CONCLUDED (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 3. T. Lepviikmann (Wellington) won the Victory Chess Congress Championship, which was concluded to-night. He finished with an unbeaten record, hav'ng eight wins and three drawn ma khes. The drawn matches were those with Steele. Kelling, and Gyles. .Lepviikmann. who was born in Estonia and has also resided in Holland, came tb New Zealand just prior to the war. The present was his third championship congress. He was third at Wellington in 1943-44, when the championship was won by Wade, and second at Auckland last year to Wade. The position in regard to the minor placings /had not reached finality tonight. McNabb (Wellington), whose excellent form after a moderate start gave him prospects of becoming run-ner-up, has an adjourned game against Darwin, which is in a very open state. At the conclusion of play the championship points, with the adjourned games in parentheses, were: Lepviikmann 9'. Wade and Steele 8).. McNabb 8 (1). Abbott 7. Stewart 51, Gyles 5, Mrs Abbott 34. Darwin 3 (1). McGilvry 3. Kebing 21. Hardy 1. B. S. Wood (Wellington) won the major open teu”ney. finishing a half a pomt ahead of M’ss Hollis (Auckland). Mitchell (Canterbury) was third. Webb (Canterburv) won the first class tourney with Pope (Wellington) runner-up.
