NOTES FROM INVERCARGILL

LISHEEN’S CONSISTENCY (Special) INVERCARGILL, Jan. 3. Aurora Australis won the Wyndham Cup in brilliant style, but a rise of 71b over two and a-half furlongs further in the Invercargill Cup almost found her out. She was definitely unlucky in the Dunedin Cup, in which she beat all but Silver Sal, but her dead-heat in the Invercargill Cup was a close call as she struck Pride of Mossburn on one of his really good days. A few yards from the winning post Pride of Mossburn had her measure, but apparently she got up in the last stride to make a dead-heat of it. Aurora Australis is now at the top of the handicap for southern events and in the Southland Handicap on Saturday she is to meet Night Robe on 131 b worse terms than when he finished a length and a-quarter behind her in the Wyndham Cup. Bayreuth atoned for his defeats earlier in the season when he won at both Wyndham and Invercargill. His performance at the 'latter meeting in running out seven furlongs in lmin 27. l-ssec on a dead track with 9.4 on his back was a meritorious one. When raced over more ground Bayreuth can be expected to gain further honours, as the Siegfried three-year-old is not lacking in stamina. His dam, Bay Biddy, was got by Shambles from Chivalry, by Gay Lad from Lady Talbot, who traces back to Lady Zetland.

Lisheen is right back to the outstanding hack form he showed last season and the Sir Simper gelding has established a great record for consistency in recent weeks. In his last seven starts he has won four races and been third three times. His success in the Flying Handicap at Invercargill was one of the most decisive sprint performances recorded for some time.
