Golden Souvenir Different opinions have been expressed concerning the source from which Golden Souvenir derives his racing merit. It may be due to the fact that he is a tail male descendant of St. Simon through Florlzell II (brother to Persimmon and Diamond Jubilee II), and the same strain is also inherited through Flying Fox, Child wick. Orme, La Fleche, Rock Sand, and William the Third. It is very rare, if, indeed, it is not impossible, to find so many strains of such a dominating line in a pedigree. The Late W. Pine The death occurred last week of William Pine a former resident of Dunedin, who was at. one time successfully associated with the racing stables of Messrs J. Stephenson and J. Hazlett when Forbury Park was the headquarters of the Dunedin Jockey Club. He won the Dunedin Cup on Tempest in 1893 and on Gipsy Grand in 1896 for the stable. His brother, J. Pine, won the first Dunedin Cup run at Wingatui on Djin Djin, in 1899. W, Pine also won the D.J.C. Handicap on Outpost in 1895 and the Timaru Cup on the same horse. Other notable winners he rode were Misfire, Emmeline, and Black and Red when they won the Invercargill Cup. For some time Pine acted as trainer for the late Mr J. F. Buchanan, and for a number of years he acted as trainer for different owners in. the North Island.
