' MEETING OF COUNCIL

A special meeting of the Tuapeka County Council held at Lawrence was attended by Cr N. J. Hay (chairman) and Crs J. Bennetts, W. Cameron, C. H. Cotton, E. H. Murney, J. D. Revie, T. Stockdill, H. S. Thompson, and C. C. Young. Mr J. P. Rutherford, Controller and Auditor-general, forwarded the audited balance sheet and statement of accounts for 1944-45. It was decided that the balance sheet and audited accounts be considered and settled, and that the chairman be authorised to sign the balance sheet, which would be published forthwith.—The chairman congratulated the clerk on again having the balance sheet returned from the auditors without any “ tags.” Ordinary Meeting At the ordinary meeting, which followed, the treasurer (Mr R. F. Batchelor) reported that the receipts for November totalled £2OOI 3s lOd, and the expenditure £952 0s sd, and that the credit balance at the bank was £1775 5s lOd. The outstanding rates for the past four years had now been reduced to £64 13s 2d. The treasurer added that for the past five years Teviot Riding had no outstanding rates, and the Waitahuna Riding had only one shilling outstanding. On the motion of Cr Revie, seconded by Cr Thompson, it was resolved that Mr D. H. Cockburn be reappointed as the representative of the Otago counties on the South Island Local Bodies’ Association for 12 months. The county engineer (Mr E. Findlayson) was authorised to attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Institute of Engineers, to be held in Wellington from February 19 to 22. Mr R. A. Cain advised that the decking of the Tallaburn bridge was unsafe for traffic of any kind, and he asked the council to repair the bridge, so that it might-'support vehicles of at least one ton.—The request was ’ granted. The Commissioner of Transport wrote intimating that if the Miller’s Flat bridge was unsuitable for class 111 loading, the appropriate course would be to fix a gross weight limitation for the structure under the council’s by-laws.—lt was decided to pass a by-law limiting the load on the bridge to eight tons, and the speed to 15 miles an hour. The dog tax fee for 1946 was fixed at 2s 6d per dog. Mr J. A. Lockhart’s tender for the collection of the 1946 dog tax was accepted. Permission was granted to the occupiers of property to cut cocksfoot on roadlines contiguous to their holdings. v Tenders The action of the chairman and riding members concerned in accepting the tender of the South Otago Transport Company, Ltd., of 4s lOd per ctibic yard for the supply and delivery of approximately 400 cubic yards of gravel on Paradise Flat road was approved.—lt was also resolved to approve of the action of the chairman and riding member in accepting the tender of Finlayson Bros, of 5s per cubic yard for the supply and delivery of approximately 360 cubic yards of gravel on Moncurs, Park Hill, and Stables roads.—The following tenders were approved:—Supply and delivery of approximately 465 yards of maintenance gravel on Willowbank-Mathe-sons main highway: Milton Transport, Ltd., 4s 9d per yard; 600 yards on Tapanui-Kelso main highway—Milton Transport, Ltd., 4s 7d per yard; 900 cubic yards on May’s Junction-McNab main highway—Milton Transport, Ltd., 5s 8d per yard; 900 cubic yards on May’s Junction-McNab main highway— Milton Transport, 4s lid per yard; 'BSO cubic yards on May’s Junction-McNab main highway—Milton Transport Company, Ltd., 4s 5d per yard.—A decision on the tenders received for a portable loading machine was held over until the next meeting. It was resolved to purchase one new lorry, of three cubic yards capacity, in the meantime. At the conclusion of the business the chairman wished the councillors and the staff the compliments of the season. Cr Revie replied.
