RIDERS IN DUNEDIN CUP

STOKES ENGAGED FOR VAFORT (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 21. Of the Riccarton jockeys who have gone to Wingatui, not all will remain till the close of the meeting. C. Stokes will do two days, and then will return to fulfil engagements on the West Coast circuit. A. Messervy's southern trip will be even shorter. After riding at Wingatui to-morrow he will fly to Auckland, where his mounts next Wednesday include Chung Chong and Verdant in the Cup and Railway double, also the improving hack Dougal. Though A. E. Didham- will ride Amorlad to-morrow, C. T. Wilson will handle him in the Dunedin Cup. Didham will be on Palm Bearer in the Champagne Stakes on the second d3 A. Stokes will ride Vafort in the Dunedin Cup, while C. McDonald will be on Competitor. G Hampton went to Waimate early this week to * assist J. Mitchell, whose horses he will pilot in their engagements at the Dunedin meeting. The Riccarton tracks will be closed on Christmas Day, but they will be open for work- on Boxing Day. This is an arrangement which will be appreciated by trainers who intend to race their horses on the West Coast, as many of them will leave for Greymouth ’on the following day. Whitley has gone north, and he will take part in sprints at the Manawatu meeting.
