METEOR AIRCRAFT
PLANE FOR THE DOMINION DUE ON CHRISTMAS EVE (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Dec. 16. The Meteor jet aircraft which is on loan to the Dominion from the British Air Ministry will arrive at Auckland from London on Christmas Eve on the New Zealand Shipping Company’s vessel Paparoa. Aucklanders will be the first in New Zealand to see the Meteor Mark 111 in the air when it is tested after assembly at Hobsonville. Six members of the R.N.Z.A.F. who have specialist knowledge of jet aircraft are coming to the Dominion on another ship. They are a pilot, Squadron Leader R. M. McKay, an officer, Squadron Leader W. G. Woodward. Flying Officer R. R. Smith, M 8.E., Warrant Officers H. L. Flanagan and M. M. Bentley, and Flight Sergeant H. W. Chadwick. Squadron Leader Woodward was attached to the Ministry of Aircraft Production, where he did a special course of maintenance, servicing and repairs for jet aircraft. Flying Officer Smith was engineer officer with the first R.N.Z.A.F. fighter squadron in the Pacific. After serving at Guadalcanar he was selected In 1943 for special training in England for jet aircraft.
