THE MAGISTRACY
GENERAL SALARY INCREASE DIFFERENTIATION REMOVED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 2. In accordance with a Cabinet decision, financial provision has been made in the Estimates for all magistrates to be paid £llOO a year, said the Minister of Justice. Mr H. G. R. Mason, to-day. He -added that that arrangement would eliminate the differentiation between magistrates which had existed for many years. “At present,” continued Mr Mason, “ the magistrate appointed as the senior in each of the four main centres is receiving £IOOO a year and all other magistrates £9OO a year. These payments are embodied in the Magistrate’s Court Act, and the change to £llOO a year for all magistrates will require the passing of an amendment to that Act. This, it is expected, will be done before the end of the present session of Parliament. “A complete revision of the Act was in hand, but was interrupted by the war,” the Minister added. “ Now that the war is over, this work will be taken up again, but it will not be practicable to consider it in relation to the present session of Parliament. In the meantime, as stated, a shorter amendment this session is anticipated to make the immediate salary adjustments.”
