Mr W. R. Clarke left yesterday morning for Wellington. Mr Harold Thomas left for Wellington yesterday.

Mr T. O'Byrne, M.L.C., and Mr M. Connelly, M.L.C., were passengers by the express yesterday on their way to Wellington. Mr Gordon H. Fairmaid, who has been a civilian internee in Singapore for over three years and a-half, arrived in Dunedin on Saturday.

Messrs G. R. Herron, T. L. Macdonald, J. A. Roy, and R. Walls, M.P.’s, left for Wellington by the express yesterday morning. Mr J. A. MacDonald and Mr P. W. Stabb left yesterday morning for Wellington to attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Real Estate Institute. Reference was made at the meeting of the jSreen Island Borough Council last night to the departure of Dr A. D. G. Blanc, who had removed to another district for health reasons. On the motion of the Mayor (Mr J. Boomer) it was decided to forward a letter to Dr Blanc expressing appreciation of his services. At the monthly meeting of the West Harbour Borough Council last night, the Mayor (Mr J. Taylor) welcomed back the town clerk, Mr W. J. Connor, who has been discharged from the R.N.Z.A.F. after service in the Pacific. The Mayor expressed the appreciation of the council of the services rendered by the acting town clerk (Mr F. E. Simkin), who has held the office since May, 1941. The correspondent of the New Zealand Press Association in London reports that Sir George Schuster, who is a director of the London board of the Bank of New Zealand and the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, has accepted tile invitation of Sir Stafford Cripps (President of the Board of Trade) to become the independent chairman of the Cotton Industry Working Committee. This committee will be composed of representatives of the management, the workers, and ” outside public interests.”

Passengers who left for the north by air yesterday were: Mr G. Benson for Christchurch: Mr J. Farrell, Mr and Mrs E. Lockshort, Mr D. Hunter, Mrs C. Hardy, and Dr H. Christie for Wellington: Mr A. G. Hewitt and Mrs M. Dansey for Auckland. Passengers who arrived from the north by the afternoon plane were: Mr R. Burton, Miss A. Dudman and Mrs Dudman from Auckland: Mrs F. E. Fenton, Mrs D. Oliver, Mr C. H. Thornton, Mr E. A. Hollins, Mrs Stagg, Mr G. W. Guthrie, and Mr B. D Gray from Wellington. Passengers who left for Invercargill yesterday were: Mrs W. Dudman Miss M. Fortune, Mrs E. Hawkins, Mr 11. Chapman, Mr F. Taylor, Mr J. Orr, Mr F. Campion, Miss A. Dudman, and Miss E. McCreath.
