VALUE OF THE POUND
Sir,—There is a saying that “ sarcasm is the smallest form of wit.'* If this is correct, the saying certainly applies to your correspondents " Security ” and “Facts." “Security” might be so kind as to inform me as to what " Bible quotations ” have got to do with the standard of living to-day. The subject in question is how the obvious inflation and high costs can be remedied. Naturally biased Labour supporters state that we are living in a glorious paradise. Quite so, except for the Socialist Government. As another correspondent pointed out, before 1935 our fruit shops were full of nice things at very cheap prices. A toy worth 6d then costs 4s 6d to-day, and that fact cannot be disputed. To “ Security ” I would say look before you leap. The remarks by “ Facts ” show an evident lack of knowledge as well as of common sense. Farmers, like everyone else, like to live and have their freedom, not Socialism. People should weigh their statements before putting them in print, because it is only by logical thinking that our present-day problems can be solved, as they will be after the next elections.—l am, etc., Dija’s Son, Dunedin.
