MALAYA LIBERATED

TROOPS ENTER SINGAPORE ABSENCE OF INCIDENT (Rec. 1 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. British and Indian troops have landed at Singapore, these being the first Allied troops to set foot there for over three years and a-half. The occupation was carried out smoothly and without incident. In a message, which was broadcast over Singapore radio, the King expressed his gratitude for the liberation of Malaya. He said that the ties of loyalty binding the peoples of the Far East to the Empire had never been broken during the dark day* of the Japanese occupation. The New Delhi radio said the first occupation troops to enter Siam have arrived at Bangkok. A Wake Island message states that Rear-admiral Shigetmatsu Sakaibara, who surrendered Wake Island, saluted the American Flag as it was raised. He said his garrison of 1200 had supplies for 12 days. It''cost Japan 3000 dead to hold Wake Island. Two thousand died of malnutrition and similar causes, and 1000 were killed in air raids. Wake Island was occupied by the Japanese on December 27, 1941.
