THE WOOL SEASON

FIRST APPRAISEMENT The Dunedin Stock Agents and Woolbrokers’ Association (Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., Donald Reid and CO., .Ltd., Stronach, Morris, and Co., Ltd., New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd., Otago Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Ltd., and NfJUonal Mortgage and Agency Company, Ltd.) reports that the first wool appraisement for the 1945-46 season was concluded yesterday. Catalogues totalling 4264 bales were submitted to the appraisers, the bulk of the offering comprising crutchings, straggler fleece, pieces, etc. The crutchings forward were, in the majority of cases, both shorter and heavier in condition, and were generally appraised on a lower type than usual, making a difference of from Id to 2d per lb. This applied to fine crossbred and crossbred crutchings. Many lines were dull in colour owing to the wet conditions experienced during the early part of the season. Parcels which were appraised as good last year were valued as average this season. There were very few supers on offer. It was also noticeable throughout the catalogues that a number of parcels of good crutchings contained firsts and seconds, and also had stains left on them. With regard to the halfbred crutchings, these, too, were generally a little shorter than usual, some lines being very littlfc longer than locks, resulting in lower prices. The fleece offered consisted principally of straggler wool, and brought full schedule prices. August-shorn wool opened up in nice condition, and brought very satisfactory rates. The new clip, judged by the earlier-shorn wool, promises to be well-grown. The next appraisal will be held about the third week in December. The date will be advertised later.
