MacARTHUR’S FUTURE
SPECULATION AROUSED MANY LUCRATIVE OFFERS (Rec. 9.50 p.m.) NEW YORK, Sept. 4. Fantastic offers have been made to General MacArthur by the press, films, and radio, says the Washington correspondent of the Herald-Tribune. It is said that the financial inducements already suggested total more than 1,000,000 dollars. There is much speculation about General Ma r Arthur’s plans. It is generally agreed that he will not stay in Japan over three years. After seeing the Japanese occupation over the worst hurdles, he will hand over to an efficient subordinate, and retire from the army. Some of his friends say the general will settle down in Washington and write his version of the many controversies in which his name figured since he last set foot in the United States. Publishing houses want the exclusive rights of General MacArthur’s memoirs. They would pay large sums for articles oy his wife, as well as “ghosted” arti'les by his eight-year-old son. Radio chains are in the bidding, and chain stores and life insurance companies want the general for exe utive posts. . Newspaper syndicates have their bids. Another view is that General MacArthur will retire to the Philippines, where he had extensive pre-war business interests.
