MOUNTBATTEN’S WARNING

SINGAPORE COMMANDER TERAUCHI HELD RESPONSIBLE LONDON, Aug. 30. The Supreme Commander, Southeast Asia, Lord Louis Mountbatten, after the exchange of messages between General Itagaki and Fieldmarshal Terauchi, broadcast a message over New Delhi radio warning Terauchi that as the supreme Japanese commander he would be held personally responsible for the execution of Lord Louis Mountbatten’s orders by all subordinate Japanese commanders.

A message yesterday stated: The Japanese remain undefeated, said the Singapore commander, General Itagaki, exchanging signals with his immediate superior, Field-marshal Terauchi, com-mander-in-chief of the Japanese southern armies. General Itagaki reiterated his determination to fight on in defiance of the Imperial surrender order.
