DISORDERS IN INDIA
MR NEHRU’S RESPONSIBILITY NEW DELHI, Aug. 30.
Mr Pandit Nehru, addressing a public meeting, said he accepted responsibility for the disturbances following the arrest of Congress leaders in 1942, because he was responsible for creating those conditions in India. The uprising nevertheless was a spontaneous act by the masses who could not tolerate all their leaders being arrested overnight. It was not started by any Congress declaration.
He said points in the Congress programme in the forthcoming elections were: Independence for India, nationalisation of heavy and key industries, and a measure of State control over planning. Referring to the question of self-de-termination, he said the Moslems in India should remain a national unit but with provincial autonomy for federating units.
