ST. BEDE’S COLLEGE

JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS

This year marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the foundation of St. Bede’s College at Papanui, Christchurch. St. Bede’s had its early beginnings as a collegiate school m 1911 on a site near the corner of Ferry road and Fitzgerald avenue, and the foundation stone of the new college at Papanui was laid by Archbishop O’Shea, present Metropolitan Catholic Bishop of New Zealand, on February 23, 1919. The college has arrangements in hand to celebrate its Silver Jubilee which will take place about the middle of October. Special reunion functions for all old boys of the college will include a solemn High Mass at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, a special reunion dinner and ball. The college annual sports meeting will be held in conjunction with the jubilee celebrations this year. It is estimated that over 2000 students have passed through St. Bede’s since it was established. More than 475 old boys of the college have served in the armed services during the present war. The present rector of the college is the Very Reverend Father J. W. Dowling, who was one of the first masters to be appointed to the new college at Papanui in 1920. To mark the occasion of the silver jubilee, a book dealing with the history of the college and its personnel, since its foundation, is to be published.
