BLEAK NIGHT
WELLINGTON SHORTAGES COAL, GAS, AND POWER (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 8. To-night was bleak and cheerless in Wellington. The electricity supply was strained almost to the maximum to meet the winter demand, gas pressures were down to the minimum, household coal, of which deliveries are very infrequent, was being carefully husbanded to eke out what was available, and a chilly southerly was sweeping the city. . .„ Though a restricted service will be available for cooking breakfast and dinner 'to-morrow, there was practically no gas supply in Wellington tonight, due to the shortage of coal. The Wellington Gas Company’s coal supplies were practically exhausted, explained the manager, Mr M. J. Kennedy. The position would continue to deteriorate unless some came to hand shortly. Meanwhile the electricity supply position is unchanged. The Evans Bay power station was working at high pressure all day to meet the demand. Its generating units depend on Diesel oil and coal, and after 8 p.m., when the loading had dropped, the station was eased off to conserve the coal. ■ Though last week —on Thursday and Friday—certain cuts-offs had to be made in the electricity supply, it has not been found necessary to take that action this week.
