NO CHANGE IN POSITION

ATTITUDE OF MINISTER '

Advice was received yesterday by the Mayor, Mr D. C. Cameron, that the Minister of Supply. Mr Sullivan, is not prepared to take any action regarding the price order for fish in Otago. A small quantity of fish arrived from Port Chalmers yesterday for free distribution to hospitals and institutions, but otherwise the trade remained at a standstill.

A meeting of retailers is to be held this morning and the Port Chalmers fishermen also propose to discuss recent developments. It is expected that a deputation from Dunedin and another from Christchurch will go to Wellington early next week to endeavour to reach some solution of the dispute. The following telegram was despatched to the Minister yesterday by the Mayor of Port Chalmers, Mr H. S. Watson:—

“ I have to-day held a lengthy conference with local fishermen. Besides the ceiling price there are other matters concerning the industry which require clarifying. As there are approximately 300 persons in this area directly and indirectly affected by the deadlock I earnestly request that an accredited representative from your department be sent here to discuss and settle amicably this unfortunate situation.”
