KILLED BY MAGPIES
I saw two magpies take a small bird off a tree, writes a correspondent of the Forest and-Bird Protection Society. By the time I got there they had killed it and started to eat it. I noticed quite a lot of skeletons of small birds about a small piece of bush which is much frequented by magpies. I have seen them chase tuis, and a neighbour of ours tells me he saw them kill a tui. The magpie frequently works in pairs. When pursuing a flying bird, they will each take an opposite flank, evidently, with a view to preventing the intended prey dodging sideways, and as they catch up to the fleeing bird they close in and. generally score a ■kill.
