INQUESTS

SUICIDE BY DROWNING An inquest was held yesterday into the death of Joseph Alphonsus Maguire, who was found drowned at Waitati on May 18. Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., sat as coroner, Charles Edward Maguire, a brother of the deceased, said he met his brother by accident in Hanover street a few days before the tragedy. He seemed very depressed, and complained about not being able to get work. He added, "A man should jump over the wharf and be done with it all.” Witness did not take him seriously, Constable G. Gow, of Waitati. gave evidence of finding the body of the deceased, who left a note saying where he could be found. The body appeared to have been in the water for two or three days.

The coroner said there could be no question that the deceased committed suicide by drowning at Waitati on or about May 14 while in a depressed state of mind,
