BETTING AND THE WAR LOAN
COMMENT BY MAGISTRATE “It would appear that a large proportion of New Zealand’s war effort consists of betting on horse races,” said Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., in the Police Court at Hamilton, when Sydney Baker, of Frankton, pleaded guilty to a charge of keeping a common gaming house. Mr Freeman said that the Government was trying to raise the Victory Loan to pay soldiers “ who are doing the job.” He deplored the fact that, in view of the poor response to the loan campaign so far, the figures for betting at Ellerslie last week-end had been a record. Baker was fined £3O. Five other men. charged with being found on the E remises, pleaded guilty and were ned £2 each. Another, who did not appear, was fined £3.
