GREEK GRATITUDE

SHIPMENT OF CLOTHING GIFT FROM NEW ZEALAND (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 8. In a letter to the Public Service Commissioner, Mr J. H. Boyes, the Consul-General for Greece, Mr T. Y. Seddon, conveys the thanks of the Greek Government to the New Zealand Council for the Organisation of Relief Service Overseas for the gift of 404 cases of warm clothing. Appreciation was also expressed to the voluntary agencies co-ordinated under C.0.R.5.0., which collected the 40,000 garments, the voluntary workers of the Red Cross Society, the Lady Galway Patriotic Society, and the Lady Galway Patriotic Guild, which bodies sorted, mended and packed the clothes. Mr Seddon quotes the following translation of a letter received by the secretary of the New Zealand Greek Patriotic Fund Committee from Athens: "Your note of October 9, 1944, which was found by me, a poor labourer, in one of the cases containing clothes which was sent by you, the true Greeks of New Zealand, moved me and all my fellow workers emotionally. I am taking the opportunity in these few lines to say to our brother New Zealanders a big ‘ thank you ’ for their idealisms and interest, and with tears in my eyes to ask you all to continue the philanthropic act which you have undertaken. You are relieving your suffering brothers and aiding in the rebuilding of Greece. With the gratitude of all here—(signed) Demetre Poriotis.”
