Lady Hicks, of Adelaide, who has been the guest of her mqther, Mrs L. Haggitt, of Driver's road, is now visiting her brother, Mr lan Haggitt, of Mataura. Miss L. J. R. Cockburn, who has been on the staff of the Southland Girls’ High School, has been appointed to the staff of the New Plymouth Girls’ High School. The Musselburgh branch of the Lady Galway Guild will meet next Wednesday afternoon at the Methodist Sunday School, Members arid friends are cordially invited.

Mrs G. H. Williden, of Hamilton, has returned home after an extended tour of the South Island, where she spent some weeks as the guest of Mrs H. W. Tapper, of “ Montbeliard,” Clyde,

The marriage was solemnised at the Basilica, Reed street, Oamaru, by the Rev. Father Fahey, on Monday, of Rex McLean, second son of Mr and Mrs Hugh Miller, of 82 Musselburgh Rise, and Kathrine Rose, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs S. W. Easton, of Kelburn, Oamaru.

Miss W. M. Hunt, a former hockey and lawn tennis blue of Otago University, and a representative player for Otago, South Canterbury, and Wellington Provinces, has retired from the teaching profession for health reasons. She has just completed 17 years’ service at Takapuna Grammar School, where she has done valuable work as coach for school teams and has also assisted in orchestral dramatic, and other activities.

The Literary Circle of the Otago Women’s Club held its monthly meeting on Tuesday night. Mrs E. J. Anderson was in the chair. The speaker was Miss Grace Farney, who delivered an address on Mark Twain, giving many readings from his works. To conclude the evening, a scene from ” Tom Sawyer ” was read by the following Mrs Stanley Harris, Misses Rewa Begg, Helen Wilson, and Doris Watson. Miss Alexander proposed a vote of thanks, and supper was served round the fire in the lounge. The Civic Circle of the Otago Women’s Club held its monthly meeting on Wednesday. Miss Andrew presided in the absence of Mrs W. B. Taverner. Mrs E. D. Duthie gave an address on “ The Aims of the Junior Red Cross,” the three main points being health, service, and international friendship. The movement was very strong in Canada and the United States, she said, and was extending in New Zealand, especially throughout the country districts. Mrs A. A. Fairbairn proposed a vote of thanks to the speaker.

The women’s section of the New Zealand National Party in the Dunedin South electorate held its first meeting of the year in the party rooms on Wednesday night. There was a good attendance of members, including new delegates from the various branches recently formed at St. Clair, Kew, South Dunedin, and Green Island. Mrs J. Campbell, who was in the chair, outlined the proposed activities for the year, and arrangements were made for a card evening in the Pioneer Women's Rooms on June 27.

Tlie annual meeting of the Logan Park Croquet Club was held on Monday. The president, Mrs McKinlay, was in the chair. The following office-bearers were elected: President, Mrs Gray; senior vice-presi-dent, Mrs Robertson: vice-president, Mrs 'McKinlay; secretary and treasurer, *Mrs O’Leary; captain, Mrs McKinlay; deputy captain, Mrs J. Knox; committee —Mesdames Knox, Lamb, and Squires; social convener, Mrs Knox; Match Committee — Mesdames McKinlay, Knox, and Gray; delegates to the cOtago Croquet Association, the president and the captain. The monthly social afternoon of the St. Leonards-Burkes Ladies’ Patriotic Committee was held on Tuesday, when Mrs Hill-Scully presided. Miss Ford, the guest speaker, delighted her audience with an interesting and humorous talk on her experiences as an educationist in some of the outlying districts in the North Island. Miss Ford’s work lay chiefly in the Native districts, and, although her talk dealt principally with work in the Native schools, she introduced many personal incidents which added greatly to the interest of her talk. The annual meeting of the North-East Valley Ladies’ Bowling Club was held in the pavilion on Tuesday last. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President. Mrs Duncan; vice-presidents, Mesdames Rigby and Wright; secretary, Mrs Grant; treasurer, Mrs Bruce; delegate to the Otago Ladies’ Bowling Association, Mrs Ansell; selector. Miss Gray; General Committee—Mesdames Collie, Pettet, Keales, and O’Connell; Ties Committee—Mesdames Gemmell, Ansell, and Hands. The jubilee celebrations, which will take Place in November, were discussed at lengtn, and the form of the celebrations will be decided at a later meeting. . The Otago Girls’ High School Ex-girls’ Association held its monthly meeting on Monday evening in the Women s Club loungei The president, Miss L. S. Morton, welcomed the guests, especially Sister Edith Allan, who had recently returned from overseas. Vocal solos were rendered by Misses Tui Rutherford and Helen Roy, the accompanists being Misses Rouse and Barth. The speaker was Miss M. H M King, who gave a talk on the monetary system. Miss L. McCarthy, on behalf of the members, thanked Miss King for her interesting address. During the evening letters were read from nurses overseas acknowledging parcels from the club. An appeal for articles of clothing for the Lady Galway Guild and tins of food for the people of Britain resulted in a very satisfactory response from members. Attention was drawn to the general meeting of ex-pupils which will be held at the school next Wednesday evening to discuss arrangements for celebrating the seventy-fifth anniversary of the school.
