ARMY CALL-UP
MAJORITY 18-YEAR-OLDS APPEAL PROCEDURE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 23. Referring to the latest call-up of men for service in the armed forces, the Minister of National Service, Mr A. McLagan, said to-day that the majority were youths who had attained the age of 18 since the last call-up in November, 1944, and would not be liable for immediate mobilisation. Consequently, said the Minister, there was no need for appeals to be submitted at this stage, and adequate facilities would be provided for the lodging of appeals later when liability for mobilisation actually materialised. “There are the names of a number of men in the Gazette who, by reason of age, are liable for immediate service, and in these cases, if a postponement is sought, the right of appeal should be exercised; at once,” the Minister added. “The calling up of these men is in pursuance of the normal procedure for the creation of a reserve of man-power for military purposes and must, of necessity, oe continued, until final victory over Japan is achieved.”
A list of Otago men who have been called for service is published on page 3.
