WARFARE AT SEA
UNANNOUNCED LOSSES ADDITIONAL BRITISH LIST (Rec. 7 p.m.)' LONDON, May 17. The Admiralty announces the loss of one cruiser, 10 destroyers, and eight submarines, in -addition to those announced in the past. The publication of these losses had been withheld where there was reason to believe that the enemy were not aware of the facts. Many of the ships became casualties from sea hazards and others as the result of damage suffered in harbour by enemy action, including air raids. The nsxt-of-kin in all cases were informed at the time. The ships lost and the dates are as follows: Cruiser.—Curacao, October 2, 1942. Destroyers.—Khartoum, June 23, 1940; Codrington, July 27, 1940; Cameron, December 5, 1940; Gallant, January 20, 1941; Maori, February 12, 3942: Legion, March 26, 1942; Kingston. April 11, 1942; Punjabi, May 8, 1942: Lance, October 22, 1942; Quail, November 15, 1943. Submarines.—Unity, April 20, 1940; Umpire, July 20, 1941; P 39, March 26. 1942: P 36, April 1, 1942; Pandora. April 1, 1942: P 551. May 2, 1942; P 514. June 21, 1942; Vandal, February 24, 1943.
Also named are one escort carrier, two armed merchant cruisers,, one sloop, one frigate, three auxiliary boarding vessels, two minelayers, 13 minesweepers, 61 trawlers, 31 drifters, and 29 miscellaneous ships. With these losses the ships lost to May 8, 1945, are now complete.
