ALEXANDRA

Borough Council.—The monthly meeting of the Alexandra Borough Council was held on Thursday evening last, and was attended by the Deputy Mayor (Mr E. Russell), Crs H. H. Hull. J. R. McKissock, A. L. Hern, L. R. Mclntosh, and L. C. Collings.—The chairman made reference to the death of Mr Jackson, brother of the Mayoress, Mrs A. McKellar. and a motion of sympathy was carried in silence.—A northern firm of nurserymen wrote acknowledging the receipt of 300 Christmas lily bulbs from the Reserve, and making suggestions for an exchange. The suggestions were approved.—The Otago Harbour Board and the Vincent County Council wrote (regarding representation on the Harbour Board, and the letters were received.—Mrs C. A. Lester wrote asking for an additional water service to her property in Ngapara street and this was granted, subject to the usual conditions.—The South Island Local Bodies’ Association forwarded a copy of (he minutes of its recent meeting. It was agreed to join up with the association for a further year.—The health inspector wrote sugggesting that a steel top be placed on the ash cart, and the matter was left to the town clerk and the inspector for attention. —The clerk reported that the year’s operations had concluded with a credit balance of £206 19s lid.—Cr Hull brought up the question of improving the lighting in the main street, and it was agreed to place two further gaseous discharge bulbs at the lower end of the street. —The question of the prospective peace celebrations was discussed, the council agreeing to purchase the necessary flags for the school children and for decorative purposes. The programme agreed upon at a previous meeting was confirmed—namely, that when Germany cjapitulates all bells and whistles be sounded and the residents congregate in the Recreation Ground for a short thanksgiving service, after which a soorts programme would be held. It was resolved that as much carnival spirit as possible should prevail, and that a monster dance be held in the Town Hall In the evening.
