MIDWAY LAUNCHED
WORLD’S LARGEST CARRIER RUGBY, Mar. 20.
The world’s largest and fastest aircraft carrier, Midway, of 45,000 tons, which was launched at Newport News to-day, is believed to be the first carrier to have an armour belt.
The Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Mr Artemus Gates, speaking at the christening ceremony of the aircraft carrier, said the decks would be covered with 1945 model aircraft, so new that they had not yet been seen in combat. It would be a combination not pleasant for the Japanese war lords’ contemplation. Mr Gates added that the Midway had heavy armour, intricate watertight compartments, and improved damage control, which constituted great strides in the direction of invulnerability.
