Mr W. R. Clarke left yesterday for Wellington.
Mr Justice Kennedy returned on Saturday after holding circuit sittings of the Supreme Court at Blenheim and Nelson.
Mr H. A. Young, who has been acting as Chief Judge of the High Court of Western Samoa for the past five months, has returned to Christchurch. Professor and Mrs Bevan Dodds have received advice that their son, Sergeant Pilot Roger Bevan Dodds, has received his commission as a sub-lieutenant in the Fleet Air Arm. Mr D. R. Thomson, who has been chief postmaster at Dunedin for the past 12 months, has received advice of his promotion to the position of chief postmaster at Christchurch. He will leave to take up his new duties some time in April. The appointment of Mr T. L. Campbell, commercial traveller, of Dunedin, as deputy of Messrs D. J. Ross and R. Walls, members of the Otago Land Sales Committee. is notified in the New Zealand Gazette.
A British Official Wireless message from Rugby states that it is announced that Air Marshal Sir Bertino Sutton, a member of the Air Council, will retire shortly and will be succeeded by Air Marsha) Sir John Slessor.
Mr A. E. Crimp, deputy registrar ol : the Supreme Court in Invercargill, has been nominated for the vacancy on the Public Service Board of Appeal. The only other nomination is that of Mr P. B. Wright, of Auckland, and an election will be necessary.
Mr G. M. Burn, who has been accountant in the Post Office Savings Bank in Dunedin for the last four years, will retire from the service at the end of this month. Mr Burn commenced his service with the department as a telegraph messenger at Fairlie 41 years ago. Squadron Leader W. J. Jarvis, who has been serving with the R.A.F. since the outbreak of war, arrived in Dunedin on Friday. He intends to undertake a course at the Otago Medical School. Squadron Leader Jarvis was formerly an Otago and New Zealand champion swimmer, and subsequently removed from Dunedin to Auckland.
Regret was expressed by the Mayor (Mr D. C. Cameron) at the annual meeting of the Otago branch of the Victoria League yesterday at the loss it had suffered by the death of Mrs E. C. Reynolds, president of the league, and Mr J. Ash, a member of the council. Both had served the city faithfully and well. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect. Passengers who left for the north by the airliner yesterday were: Dr M. Falconer and Mr J. French for Christchurch; Mr and Mrs A. D. Paisley, Miss V. Sanson, and Mrs H. Lor for Nelson; Mr C. M. Bruce for Wellington; Mrs S. Dryden, Miss K. Price, and Mr R. H. Parker for Auckland. Passengers who arrived by the afternoon plane were: Mr W. Aspinall, Mr and Mrs M. Cooper from Auckland: Mr A. S. Fraser, Mr Greenslaae. Mr L. C. Hazlett, and Mr W. T. Hazlett from Wellington: Miss N. Moffitt from Christchurch. Passengers who left for Invercargill were: Miss A. Cook, Mrs H. S. Adams. Mr C. R. Birchall. Mr G. S. Edgar, Miss N. Moffitt, Mr W. T. Hazlett, and Mr and Tvlrs M. Cooper.
