ROAD LIGHTING IN BROAD BAY

Sir—We have been advised that a petition In favour of road lighting is being circulated in a portion of the township. It would be interesting to ascertain what section of the ratepayers is going to benefit from the scheme, and where the lights will be placed over an area more than a mile long. -According to a p an before the County Council, nearly all the lights are to be on the main highway. Lights on the highway are of no benent to the ratepayers, and would be a definite nuisance to bus drivers and motorists. The idea fostered by half-crown ratepayers and guests of the State is as worthy of support as their proposal to make the Peninsula County into a borough. No doubt these people have the same power as those who pay the taxes and have none of the responsibilities, but before handing over control of their taxes, ratepayers would do well to ascertain some further details of the scheme, management and costs.—l am, e t c Occasional Resident..
