HARDER BLOWS

AMERICAN ASPIRATIONS (Rec. 7 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Mar. 16. Having concluded a series of conferences with President Roosevelt, Lieutenant-general Wedemeyer (Commander of the United States Forces in the Far East) told the press that he was now hopeful of striking harder blows on the Asiatic mainland.

“We are trying to create ground forces with which we can do something,” he said. “So far we have not done much, but there has not been much with which to do it. We have, however, good air forces there.” He explained that the chief purpose of the Washington visit was the co-or-dination of all Allied resources.

Major-general Edwin Patrick, commander of the Sixth Infantry Division, was killed on March 14 by a concealed Japanese machine-gun in the Shimbu Line, says the American Associated Press Manila correspondent. He was commander of the 158th Regimental Combat team at Wakde, Noemfoor, and New Guinea.
