FIFTH ARMY ADVANCE

FORCED TO WITHDRAW (Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, Mar. 18. American Fifth Army armoured vehicles yesterday broke into Salvero, only a.few hundred yards from the Bologna-Pistonia highway, behind the German stronghold of Vergato. says Reuter's correspondent. Attacking at dawn after a heavy artillery preparation, armoured forces and infentry captured several buildings in the town, including a portion of a heavily defended church. The Germans laid down a heavy artillery and mortar counterbarrage and forced the Fifth Army forces to withdraw from the town. German infantry on the Eighth Army front attacked an Allied strongpoint on the east bank of the Senio River at Sanpolito and were beaten aff after suffering casualties.
