AKYAB ISLAND LANDING
ENEMY REMNANTS DEPART
(Rec, 9 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 7. The remnants of the Japanese garrison on Akyab Island are reported to have left by the easterly route as our troops landed on the north-eastern beaches. In Kaladan Valley there was patrol activity, and Japanese artillery shelled one of our positions. In the Babo Ye-U area our troops are consolidating their bridgehead following successful air attacks. South of Kanbalu our troops continued to make progress. Chinese troops made slight progress on the Namhkam road towards Man Wing on Friday. Other units engaged in patrol action in the Inlei Wing area. Heavy bombers attacked objectives on the Burma-Siam railway on Friday. On the previous day they hit a station and sidings at Onankwin on the same line. Another formation bombed areas at Taungup. Many river craft in the Kaladan and Lemro River areas northeast of Akyab were hit by fighters, while fighter-bombers attacked enemy positions in and around Kychaung. Medium bombers damaged two bridges near Toungeo. Fighter-bombers hit bridges at Sinthegon and Sinthe, and fighters attacked river craft in the Toungeo . Prome - Kenzdada triangle. One Allied aircraft is missing.
