HEAVY BOMBERS
RAIL CENTRES HAMMERED OVER 1100 PLANES ENGAGED (Rec. 9 p.m.) RUGBY, Jan. 4. More than 1100 American heavy bombers yesterday attacked German railway and road centres at over a dozen different points. It was the twelfth consecutive day of operations for the United States Eighth Air Force. Targets included communication centres north-west of Karlsruhe and other communication centres near the Belgian-German border. Marshalling yards at Cologne, Aschaffenburg, and Fulda were also attacked. The Fortresses and Liberators were escorted by more than 600 Mustangs and Thunderbolts.
Separate forces of Lancasters yesterday afternoon, each with an escort of Mustangs from R.A.F. Fighter Command, attacked two enemy benzol plants—the Castre Rauxel and Hansa works, near Dortmund. Both attacks were made by instrument through cloud. The. two plants are within five miles of each other. The Rauxel works were attacked shortly after noon and the Hansa about three hours later. The Air Ministry states that a shortage of fuel remains the enemy's main preoccupation, and although the benzol works produce only a minute fraction of the oil turned out by the synthetic plants every drop is important. Fighter Command Spitfires, continuing attacks against V2 targets in Holland to-day, bombed a railway line supplying the V2 area.
