QUEENSTOWN

Borough Council.—The monthly meeting of the Queenstown Borough Council was attended bv the Mayor (Dr W. A. Anderson) and Crs J. B. Hamilton, H. Sew Hoy, A, H. O’Malley, W. Scott, and D. W. Thompson.—The Minister of Railways (Mn R, Semple) advised that he was having the matter of a shelter at the railway office investigated. Under separate cover, Mr Semple, as Minister of Works, advised the council to forward particulars regarding applicants for State houses In the town. If it was shown, he said, that the demand warranted consideration, the necessary steps would be taken to provide State houses. The matter was referred to the Ratepayers’ Association.— Th« proprietor of the Town Hall pictures was given permission to show pictures on Christmas night on conditions as lo the suitability of the pictures and the time of starting and that the proceeds go to the Patriotic Fund as suggested.—ln reply to a letter from the chief postmaster, Invercargill, It was agreed to purchase £1 worth of health stamps.—ln reply to an inquiry, the Mayor stated that the power from the Central Otago Power Board’s system had been switched on to Queenstown temporarily. The two units'would be synchronised before the tourist season began.—The Mayor was appointed to attend a meeting of local bodies in Invercargill for the purpose of setting up a regional planning council to consider, among other things, the furtherance of the development of the tourist industry.— A complaint regarding overhanging trees on footpaths or street lines was referred to the town clerk for appropriate action. —The Ratepayers’ Association asked the council to approach the Railways Department with a view to having railway buses put on the Kingston road to provide for the extra traffic on days when the steamer was doing the Kingston run.—The council received a large framed picture of Queenstown showing details of streets and public buildings, and it was decided to place it in a conspicuous place in the town-=-It was decided to purchase ~-a Yiumber of second-hand skeleton, huts .for re-erection on the camping ground,vfor the use ol campers.—ln reply to a question concerning the position of assistant town clerk after the Central Otago Power Board takes over the Queenstown scheme, on April 1, the Mayor stated that the board had offered the sum of £2OO per annum for an office and the services of a collecting agent. It was recommended 1 tha*. the assistant clerk be retained for the duty and that his salary be supplemented by the council so as to bring it up to the requisite amount. The offer of tne board for an office and collector was accepted,— The cotmcil approved of the carnival programme.—Accounts amounting to £1099 4s 3d were passed for payment. Meteorological.—ihe highes,. barometrical reading last month was 20.022 Inches, the mean 28.708 inches, and the lowest reading 28.286 inches. The mean temperature for thd month was 52.5 degrees, and the mean grass temperature 33.2 degrees. The sunshine hours were 232 8, and the rainfall was 1.49 inches.

Rotary Club,—The speaker at the weekly Ro’.ary Club luncheon was Mr F. Baker, Director of Rehabilitation, who spoke cn the many problcrns confronting the department. St. Peter’s Guild.—A successful sale of work and produce was held in the Parish Hall on Saturday last under the auspices of the Ladies’ Guild. The various stalls brought ready buyers, and guessing competitions helped to swell the funds. Bowling.—The Queenstown rink survived a challenge from an Arrowtown rink on Saturday for the Jolly Cup. The scores were 26—17 in favour of Queenstown at the twentieth head.
