WESTERN ATLANTIC

GERMAN U-BOATS RETURN

OTTAWA, Oct. 19,

The crash of bursting depth charges along Canada’s Atlantic shores heralded the return of U-boats to this side of the Atlantic, but skippers arriving at Montreal report that the Canadian naval forces are battling with them with everything they have, says the Montreal Star. One captain said that recently he had heard more depth charges than at any time since the Battle of the Atlantic.

Skippers believe the attacks are made by suicidal Nazis driven from captured German submarine bases in Western Europe. They are determined to do as much damage as possible before capture or sinking, because they are wandering the ocean without any means of supply or hope of ever returning for repairs. If the enemy scores some successes the damage inflicted on the U-boats far outweigns the number of ships struck in the hit-and-run raids—the worst since 1941.
