IMPORTERS AND SHIPPERS
MEETING OF EXECUTIVE The monthly meeting of the executive of the Otago Importers and Shippers’ Association was attended by Mr J. D. McKechnie (president) in the chair, and Messrs A. de Beer, J. Elvidge, W. E. Earnshaw, C. H. Johnstone, J. C. H. Somerville and W. J. Winefield. A letter of thanks and appreciation which had been sent to Mr A. H,. Allen for his fine record as Mayor of the city during the trying period of the war was read. It recalled the fact that he had been one of the prominent foundation members of the association. A similar letter of appreciation of his long services as a member of the Harbour Board, specially representing the “ payers of dues on goods,” had also been sent to Mr J. B. Waters on his recent retirement. In this connection satisfaction was expressed that Mr J. G. Jeffery, the nominee of the association, had been elected to fill the position. The secretary reported that at the request of the town clerk it had been arranged that the president would represent the association at any meetings called in regard to a local airport, while the vice-president would attend in connection with matters relating to the centenary, of the province. In regard, to the increase in the pillaging of cargo as the war continues, more than one member gave instances of the recent loss of a large proportion of the total contents of cases when examined on arrival at Dunedin. It would appear that Dunedin cargo transhipped at North Island ports for forwarding on is particularly liable to pilfering.
