Word has been received by Mr D. Bretherton lhat his son, Basil J. Bretherton, has been promoted to the rank of flying officer. The Mayor (Mr D. C. Cameron) was appointed- by the City Council at its meeting last night as its representative on the council of the University of Otago.

The president, Mr A. T. Campbell, of Christchurch, and the vice-president, Mr C. L. Gillies, of Auckland, have been elected by postal ballot to represent the New Zealand section of the New Education Fellowship at the Government’s education conference, to be held in Christchurch in August.

The New Zealand High Commissioner to Canada, Mr D. Wilson, is back in Wellington, having arrived at Auckland from Canada towards the end of last week. Mr Wilson returned because of the illness of his wife in Wellington. Mrs Wilson was reported yesterday to be making some progress towards recovery. Passengers who left for the north by airliner yesterday were Mr D. H. Blackie, Mr J. E. Green, Mr H. Sutherland, Miss K. Mowat, Miss B. Goudie, and Mr Yiavacis for Wellington, Mr D. Adie, Mrs M. B. O’Loughlin, and Mr F. Burley for Auckland. Passengers who arrived by the afternoon plane were Miss Belcher, Miss Day, and Mr A. D. Strachan from Auckland, Mr J. Harris from Palmerston North, Miss F. Barnett. Mrs H. Chapman, Mr E. A. Wallace. Mr J. Preston, and Lieutenant J. A. Bevin from Wellington, and Mr N. Strachan from Christchurch.
