RACING IN ENGLAND
SUBSTITUTE DERBY STAKES WON BY OCEAN SWELL (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, June 18. The substitute Derby Stakes resulted as follows:—Ocean Swell 1, Teheran 2, Happy Landing 3. Twenty started. A neck, short head.l Time, 2mln 31sec. Ocean Swell brought off a big surprise. He is a Home-bred colt by Blue Peter from Jiffy, who goes back to a line from which the present Lord Rosebery’s father bred many winners. It gave Lord Rosebery much satisfaction that his previous Derby winner, Blue Peter, should have been the successful sire. The race was run at a slow pace until seven furlongs, after which it suddenly quickened. Blue Peter’s time in 1939 was 2min 36 3-ssec. The Oaks resulted: Hycilla 1, Monsoon 2, Kannabis 3. Length, length and a-half. Time, 2min 30 3-ssec. Hycilla did not run as a two-year-old and in her only race previous to the Oaks ran second in the Maiden Stakes for three-year-olds.
