NOTES FROM RICCARTON
(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, June 17. This morning’s galloping at Riccarton was done on the trial grass track, but only a few of the horses engaged at the South Canterbury meeting were sent along in serious tasks.
Nurnle opened the proceedings by running five furlongs in lmin 2 4-ssec, the last four in 49 4-ssec. This was easily the best trial, and he is very well. Rex Maitland ran half a mile in 51sec, Scottish Lad going up . the back in similar time, while Bill Gundi and Ration beat Fairy Knight over five furlongs in lmin 4 2-ssec.
Gamble, carrying a big weight, had Saldowa as a mate in a smart mile in lmin 44sec. Treasurer covered the same ground comfortably in lmin 48 4-ssec, while Amorlad took lmin 57sec, going easily. Test Pilot gave a brilliant display in a school over four hurdles. Cataract jumped well in a similar task, though still inclined to get up in the air. Tatting led Hughsotis over six hurdles, the former jumping attractively, but without as much speed as the earlier horses. A. McMullan’s Sky Pilot gelding lost his rider at the first hurdle, but afterwards weht over four safely. Chins Up and Gleucos went out to school over nine fences, but neither shaped up to his best form. It was the first time the new post and rail fence had been used, and both horses hesitated at the new obstacle.
