TAIERI COUNTY
MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the Taleri County Council was held at Mosgiel yesterday, and was attended by Mr J. A. Wither (chairman) and Crs J. Sutherland, C. Findlay, W. I. Nichol, J. A. Gow, G. Stevenson, and J. W. Penno. Mr Wither was re-elected chairman for the ensuing year. A general rate of 13d in the £ was struck, together with the annual recurring special rates. The capital value is the same as last year. The engineer, Mr G. D. King reported on the maintenance work done during the month Mr J. W. Rollinson wrote asking that a wash-out under the bridge on the road leading to his property should be given attention.—Left in the hands of Cr Findlay and the engineer. Mr W. D. Dawson (Henley) wrote asking that attention be given to the road leading to his property.—To be attended to as soon as possible. Mr W. Waldron (Dunedin) wrote offering to purchase willows at Riverside.— The matter was left in the hands of the engineer. The Minister of Works, Mr R. Semple, advised that when he visited Dunedin in the near future he would meet a deputation regarding the river bank at Riverside.—Received. The Highways Board wrote supplying particulars of a modified scheme for improving the Allanton-Outram highway.— The matter was left in the hands of the engineer and the consulting engineer. The district engineer of the Works Department (Mr C. Langbein) advised that the council’s proposals for metalling the Henley Church road had been approved from an engineering point of view. He added that at present there were no funds available for the work, and it would be necessary for the council to make application for its inclusion on the annual Works Estimates when a favourable opportunity occurred.—lt was decided to hold the work over until the Government grant was made. Cr Findlay was reappointed to represent the council on the Highways Council. A questionnaire circular regarding the centennial memorial was received from the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and, after a good deal of discussion, it was decided, on the motion of Cr Nichol, seconded by Cr Sutherland, that the council support an afforestation scheme in the vicinitv of Dunedin. Cr Penno drew attention to the state of the roads in the vicinity of Green Island Bush.—lt was decided that he and the engineer should inspect the roads in the riding.
